Kalaripayat trip March 2009

Exploring Ancient Indian Martial Arts

After travelling through the east and the south of South East Asia, Kruu Villalobos went to the west of India to continue his research regarding the connections between ancient martial arts and spirituality. His trip took him to Kerala province located in the southern part of India in where he was taught the ancient art of Kalaripayat.

Kalaripayat

Kaliripayat is a complete system of martial arts - practitioners learn how to heal and how to damage the opponent.

Kalaripayat

Kruu Villalobos went to visit different Kalaripayat schools spread all around Kerala to experience the different philosophies and methods of training that each master uses.

Kalaripayat teaches a diversity of empty hand techniques going from striking to grappling. Weapons also feature with an extensive range of variations.

Kalaripayat

Kruu Villalobos found many useful techniques and footwork patterns that the kalaripayat weapons system uses against many opponents.

Kruu learnt about the healing aspects of Kalaripayat - about how to align the direction of our training with the gravitational direction of the Earth, the different ways to breath to accumulate Prana (life force) and the different kinds of healing massage in the Aryurvedic herbal tradition

This kind of beneficial knowledge was much needed in the muay sangha system to prevent or correct injuries

Kalaripayat

At the end of the trip Kruu knew that the trip to India was not about learning advance techniques of fighting rather to learn about how to maintain the body in an optimal condition using ancient knowledge so it doesn’t deteriorate as time passes.
